Pippin

May 31 - June 3  2001
Directed by Mark J. Dibble

From The Director

There is a spoken lyric at the beginning of Emerson, Lake and Palmer's live album from about 100 years ago.  This magnificent male voice booms "Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends..." and a synthesizer rips into the opening of Aaron Copeland's "Hoedown."  Although this piece never comes into play in Pippin, it is nonetheless integral to the way I approach this particular show.

In my opinion, this show never ends.  Or, put another way:  Pippin is timeless.

This is the 4th version of this show I have been involved with and my 3rd time directing it.  I have seen it performed live at Ithaca College and with the immortal Ben Vereen at Proctor's in Schenectady.  The thing that always hits me, no matter what tact the director takes with the show, is how relevant the moral of the story is.  I will leave that moral to you to decide for yourselves, but suffice to say that since the first time I heard the show in the mid 70's, to the time I saw the show in the late 70's, until today, I have always found so much depth to the message contained in the story.  I trust you will leave here with some things to think and (I dare say) talk about.

A question for you to ponder as the curtain begins to rise on the final performance of our 4th season:  "Without wants or needs, what happens to the rewards that comes to us out of human struggle?"
