About the Show  ·  The Players  ·  The Crew  · From the Director

A musical comedy by Howard Ashman and Alan Menkin

Meek, nebbish Seymour Krelbourn, stuck in a dead-end job as a florist’s assistant in a less-than-successful flower shop on Skid Row, has his life turned around when he comes across an unusual tiny plant. Naming the plant "Audrey II" after the salesgirl who is his secret love, Seymour attempts to grow the plant, to no avail...until he discovers the essential element of its diet: blood. As the plant thrives, bringing Seymour the attention, fame, and fortune he craves, the two strike a Faustian deal: Audrey II agrees to attract publicity if Seymour continues feeding its growing appetite. Seymour, his boss Mushnik, Audrey, and her abusive dentist boyfriend are eventually swept into the plant’s evil machinations as its true motives become clear.

From the Director

Welcome to the Theatre!

On behalf of BLT, and all the folks who’ve had a hand in its formation, please allow me to thank you for the support of the arts in Bradford that has brought us to the opening of our fifth anniversary season. We open this season mindful of the events that have touched us over the last few weeks.

As with all anniversaries, we pause to reflect on the past and dream of the future. We remember the events in our REAL lives that have affected who we are and make us the people and performers who have come together to produce this show.

Looking back at the past was part of what brought us to the choice of Little Shop. As a tongue-in-cheek homage to some of the cheesiest movies ever made, horror films especially, the show takes us on a walk through the pitfalls of timidity, greed and unbridled ambition.  It is a spoof of all that has come before it, from  King Kong to The Blob to Michael Jackson’s "Thriller." We intend to poke fun at our fears and stereotypical thinking.

The ‘column and cube’ set was chosen to allow the audience’s imagination help tell the story, because, as I was reminded several years ago by a very wise designer, "the audience enjoys helping to tell the story !" The set design is a tribute to our dear friend, John "Shortie" Shortencarier, an award-winning designer who passes away recently.

Looking ahead to our future, we see bright things. Based on the support you’ve shown us in our first five years, the future looks rosey indeed.

We thank YOU for our past and invite you to share our future.

Enjoy!
