From the
Director
Diane Kerner Arnett
Great Britain was shell-shocked and war-weary when Agatha Christie wrote the radio play "Three Blind Mice" as a present to Queen Mary from the BBC, who had asked Her Majesty to choose a birthday gift. The government rations on clothing, nylons, sweets, meats, dairy, and more continued. Britons were urged to "Make Do and Mend."
Renamed
"The Mousetrap," the play premiered November 25, 1952 in London at the
Ambassadors Theatre. Even with a move to St. Martin’s Theatre in 1974,
the show has never closed, despite the Queen of Crime’s own prediction
it would run eight months at most.
Asked why it endured, Christie said: "…there is a bit of something in it for everybody."
There are some deep questions in the show: Can we ever really know another person? How do we best deal with personal tragedy? What price revenge?
But
mostly this is a jolly good whodunit puzzler with lots of laughs and a
cast of characters who, as Mollie describes them, are "all either unpleasant
or odd."
Our set and our dialogue for this show are as near to the original as possible. Our pre-show ’40s music and BBC news bits are original to this production as a way to help you mentally journey back to 1949.
So, please enjoy. Like Dame Agatha, we have "simply been out to entertain."
On behalf of the cast and crew, thank you for coming and thanks to our families. As for myself, special thanks go to Bob for getting me back into community theatre, to Chris for keeping me there, and to Friday Fellowship, without whom this would never have been attempted.
